The Different Approach You've Been Looking For

Are you sick of the lack of results you're getting with your health?

Do you feel like you're doing the same things and not getting better?

Tired of taking pills and potions?

Would you like a different approach?

One of the most common things that people tell me after they start getting adjusted is "Why didn't I know about Chiropractic earlier?" or "Why did I wait so long before doing something about my problem?"

When we start to get the spine healthy again and start to unwind the stress patterns that have been building up, its amazing what can happen - the body can recover, heal and regenerate.

Are you up for something different? I'd love to know.

The Best Exercise For People Who Sit Too Much

You may or may not have heard the saying "Sitting is the new smoking!" - where that a saying comes from is from the research that shows that sitting for long periods has a HUGE detrimental affect on our health.

What can we do? We have to sit to do our job. We have to sit to drive the car. Sometimes it's unavoidable.

If you find yourself having to sit for hours during the day - this one excise can help to minimise the damaging effects.

Give it a try for 3-5 minutes every day (twice if you can) and you'll be amazed at the effects physically and mentally.

I'd love to know how you go.

Posture and your Health. Is there a connection?

Posture: We’ve all heard our parents and grandparents say “Sit up straight Dear.” Is there anything to it other than what we look like? Is it all aesthetics?

Well, according to some research out of the Journal of Physical Therapy Science, it can have HUGE effects on our HEALTH.

Here’s the conclusion of their research.

The forward head posture causes expansion of the upper thorax and contraction of the lower thorax, and these morphological changes cause decreased respiratory function.

Does your posture need improving? Is your posture getting you down? Let me know.

Headaches - a pain in the neck?

It’s estimated that HEADACHES affect over 5 million Australians. That’s a lot people, like you, that are having to deal with the pain, the discomfort, the associated lack of concentration, lack of energy and decreased ability to focus.

You might also be facing decreased productivity at work, a shorter fuse with the kids or your partner and for some people it can be a large triggering factor in depression.

There are many causes of headaches from dehydration, medication use, stress, hormonal and allergies to name a few. A surprising number of headaches are what’s called CERVICOGENIC headache. - meaning your headaches are coming form your neck.

Research in the journal SPINE, showed that up to 20% of people suffering from chronic headaches, their headaches were coming from the NECK.

Your neck is made up of your skull and seven bones called vertebrae. Muscles attach on to the vertebrae allowing your head and neck to move and to maintain upright posture.

What I’ve seen in practice over the past 21 years is the association between someones posture, the tension in their neck and shoulders and the severity and frequency of their headaches.

In short….the worse someones posture and the more tension they have in the neck and shoulders, the more headaches they suffer from.

Forward Head Posture

What is it and why should you care?

Forward head posture (FHP) is a poor habitual neck posture defined by hyperextension (craning) of the upper cervical vertebrae and forward translation of the cervical vertebrae. It is often associated with increase in rounding of the shoulders and mid back (hyperkyphosis).

In simple terms - In FHP the head sits forward from the shoulders and often with a “hunching” of the upper back.

So What? Is it a big deal? Is it just cosmetic?

Here’s what the Journal of Physical Therapy Science had to say…

the present study makes it clear that the characteristics of thoracic shape and mobility during volitional deep breathing are impacted by head position, and that FHP may adversely influence respiratory health and fitness.

Here’s what the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society had to say….

CONCLUSION: Older men and women with hyperkyphotic posture have higher mortality rates

Here’s what the researcher Almeida concluded.

Adult patients with asthma exhibit specific postural disorders that correlate with pulmonary function and body composition. The assessment of postural variables may provide a better pulmonary rehabilitation approach for these patients.

So, as you can tell this is a pretty big deal. Your posture can affect how you breathe, how you look, how you feel AND how long you live. WOW!

If this is you, If you’re getting headaches and if your posture is not as good as it could be, or if it’s worrying you, please follow these steps.

  1. Make sure you’re well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help eliminate dehydration from the major cause of your headaches.

  2. Improve your posture. Sit for less and hold yourself upright in a tall relaxed posture. You might want to check out my video HERE.

  3. See a Chiropractor. Chiropractors are experts in making sure your spine is working well and that your posture is as good as it can be. Through adjustments and postural training this can be the missing piece of not only the headache puzzle but your overall health as well.

  4. Decrease stress levels. STRESS is a major cause of headaches. This is often silent and builds up over time, so take some time out of your day to “unwind”. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing, visualisation exercise can all help.

If you’re still suffering and haven’t got the bottom of your headaches then I’d love to hear from you. You can shoot me an email, drop me a message on the socials or give the practice a call on (03) 7005 7672

Do You See What I See?
gc+g0HrkSDG8pzfN2nMHFw.jpg

When you look at this image, what do you see?

…a bunch of bones, nerves and tissues? The brain? The spinal cord? Anything else?

Here’s what I see…..

  1. The magnificence of the human design.

  2. The “information super-highway” called the brain and spinal cord.

  3. The in-built healing potential of the body.

  4. The importance of maintaining the health and integrity of the spine.

So what’s the big deal?

When it comes to health, our actions - the things we do and don’t do, are determined by the world-view of health that we hold, whether consciously or unconsciously. To make it simple I will put these world views on health into 2 categories.

  1. The Body is imperfect and faulty. Sickness happens TO us.

  2. The body is intelligent and self healing. Health comes from within.

So let’s assume world view number one:

  • If sickness happens TO us from the outside - in, then it makes sense that the solution is from the outside - in in the form of pills, potions, lotions and procedures. Practically, it would look like this….if I have a fever, I will take a pill or potion to bring the fever down. If I have “high blood pressure” I will take a pill to bring it down. If I have a runny nose, I will take a pill or potion to stop it running. If my organ is not functioning correctly I can have it removed or procedure done to try to help. etc etc. You see, the actions are all geared at reversing what the body is doing, with no or little regard for WHY.

Now lets assume world view number 2.

  • Health comes from within: Why is my body giving me these signals? What can I do? How can I BE that will increase my body’s RESISTANCE, how can I increase the healing potential of my body? Does my body have the RESERVES necessary to HEAL?

  • Let’s look at how I am Eating, Moving and Thinking as the building blocks to enable HEALTH to shine.

  • Let’s keep a healthy spine so the communication system is firing optimally - to give our body the best chance of being healthy. A nervous system in fight/flight will not create HEALTH in the long term.

ACTION: Take notice….are your habits geared at HEALTH or at SICKNESS? Maybe it’s time to change things up. If you’re not happy with the results you’re getting regarding your HEALTH, then it’s time to change. Maybe it’s time to change the world view of health and look to a different approach. Or not?!

I’d be happy to chat about it.

Are HEADACHES getting you down?

Oh my goodness - headaches can be a nightmare.

Waking up in the morning and your first thought is “Is my headache still there?” Sitting at your desk and not able to concentrate because your head is pounding, maybe you’re getting grumpy with the kids and your partner?

There is hope.

Over the past 20 years I’ve helped countless people suffering with headaches.

There are many causes - and one of the most common is a problem with the spine, in particular the upper neck.

When we have a problem with the upper neck, it can cause irritation on the nerves, overload and strain on the muscles. The end result can be HEADACHES.

What’s the next step then?

Get yourself checked by a Chiropractor. Have your spine assessed, thoroughly to see if it could be the cause of your headaches.

If you have any questions, send me an EMAIL and I’ll be happy to answer them.
