Sickness pays - and the rewards are huge.

With all the information readily accessible to anyone with an internet connection about HEALTH, you would think that as a society we should be getting healthier year on year. Well, the stats tell a different story. Chronic disease is continuously on the rise. This is LIFESTYLE disease. Disease we get from not eating, moving and thinking in ways we are designed to.

One of the big reasons for this continual rise in chronic disease is that there is a reward system in place for it.

  1. We get SICK days off work not WELL days.

  2. We get SICK pay not WELL pay

  3. We get chicken soup made for us when we are SICK but how often does tat happen when we are WELL?

  4. We get extra cuddles and attention the new are SICK not WELL.

  5. Companies make BILLIONS of dollars the you’re SICK , with no commercial interest in getting you WELL.

  6. Conversations are endless when we’re SICK - just sit and listen to conversation happening around you - “I’ve got this…” “My ____ is playing up” “I’ve got an appointment with the specialist ……” and on it goes.

Our whole society is set up for us to be SICK, and to be REWARDED for it. At the extreme it can become someone’s whole identity - without the illness / sickness / complaint, they would have nothing important in their life - so the rewards for keeping the status quo are huge.

So what can we do about it? Is it all doom and gloom?

We can start rewarding people’s HEALTHY behaviours. Give your kids a wellness day off school (when they can actually enjoy a day off), teach and be a role model for our kids that being HEALTHY is rewarding.

High five someone for going for that run, for riding to work, for eating clean, for saying no to the after work drink. You’ll also feel better for it.

Be well.

6 Steps to Better Health

Health can be tricky, complicated and even controversial topic. At it’s core, its very simple AND the most valuable asset we have. Ask a sick billionaire what’s important, ask someone that neglected their health until it was too late what’s important when you’re young. We all agree that Health is important but doing to he right about it is often confusing.

Here’s 12 principles that if properly understood, can change your life and health forever -

  1. You are designed to be HEALTHY - healthy is normal, unhealthy is abnormal.

  2. Your body is smart. Think about it - your body knows what to do at all times. There’s an innate (inborn) intelligence running it.

  3. This innate intelligence uses the Nervous System to control and coordinate the healing - helping us adapt and deal with stress.

  4. Your spine is your suit of armour. Your spine protects the spinal cord like the skull protects the brain.

  5. Stress causes a condition known as Subluxation. Subluxation creates interference to the nervous system communication - altering Brain-Body communication.

  6. Subluxation causes dysfunction that can manifest as symptoms and conditions. Subluxation can be the root cause of many unwanted health problems.

  7. Your life is abnormally stressful. Modern life is naturally fast-paced and filled with stress.

  8. Subluxation is caused by STRESS. 3 types of stress that cause Subluxation are: Physical, chemical and emotional stress, other wise known as Trauma, toxins and thoughts.

  9. How would you know off you had Subluxation? Only Chiropractors are trained to objectively test for Subluxation.

  10. What should you do if you have Subluxation? Only specific Chiropractic adjustment correct Subluxation.

  11. We are on a mission to help our community. Everyone wanting greater health should be checked by a chiropractor.

  12. I need your help. If you don’t tell your family and loved ones, who will?

Understanding the principles above, will help shape your habits and get the answers you’ve been looking for. Maybe it’s time for a check up and adjustment.

You are WAY more intelligent than you think.
  1. Your body is intelligent.

  2. Your nervous system controls and coordinates the health and function of the body.

  3. A healthy spine is vital to have a healthy nervous system.

  4. As a chiropractor - my job is to make sure your spine is as healthy as possible, in turn allowing you to be as healthy as possible.

Your body consists of at least 75 TRILLION cells, each producing thousands of chemical reactions every second of the day. The health and function of each cell is coordinated WITHOUT the need for conscious attention and is constantly changing and adapting based on the stresses placed upon you.

Your inborn wisdom knows exactly what your body needs in any given moment, it knows when you need it AND how to make it, keeping you alive and healthy.

There is a constant stream of information flowing to and from all the cells of your body - carefully and efficiently coordinated by the NERVOUS SYSTEM.

Malfunctions or misalignments of the joints in the body (especially the spine), interfere or disrupt the messages of the nervous system. The result can be a reduction in the function of your body’s cells and organs, loss of your ability to adapt to stress and diminished levels of health.

A a chiropractor, I am aiming to restore the function of your spine. By doing this I am gently freeing your nervous system to allow your body to coordinate and heal more effectively.

No matter what disease or condition you have, you can benefit from having a healthy spine.
Your body is amazingly intelligent, start giving it the credit it deserves. Time for an adjustment?

Among the many things contributing to your health: the quality of the air, food and water you take in; how you handle stress; your inherited weaknesses and strengths ; your use of drugs; exercise; and relaxation - a healthy spine is essential.

Research update - Increased strength, enhanced brain function through Chiropractic adjustment.

Research update: Some very cool research coming out of New Zealand shows that when we adjust the spine in areas of Subluxation / misalignment, we can increase muscle strength in the arms and legs through - Changing The Brains Output!!!

How cool is that? Wow.

Chiropractic care is not just about getting you feeling better - it is a whole lot more than that.

We are a product of our neurology. How we perceive the world, adapt, heal, grow, interact, emote, connect - is all dependant on the health of our nervous system. Having a healthy spine is CRUCIAL to having a healthy nervous system.

Time for an adjustment!

What I Learnt From My Chiropractor - It Wasn't What I Was Expecting.

I was a teenager when I first went to the Chiropractor. The reason I went was because of my football injuries. The Chiropractor helped me in 2 major ways.

1. Helped my injuries and I ended up being way faster and stronger.

2. He gave me a whole new way of look ing at health (and life). You see, wha the thought me was the concept of innate health. Health is the natural state of the body. Given the right ingredients, the body can heal and be healthy. Our spine has a big role to play in the health of the human body.

How's your spine going?

My Favourite Exercise For People With Lower Back Pain

I'm often asked which exercises should be done by people who have been seeing me for Low back pain.

I share my favourite exercise for the lower back.

This is not an exercise for someone who is in acute pain and is finding it hard to move. This is for someone who wants to start to strengthen their lower back and regain proper control of the muscles and supporting structures.

This exercise is best done in conjunction with a proper care plan by your Chiropractor. I'd love to know how you go. Remember slow and controlled is better.

Get Off The Couch

All too often I hear from people wanting to know advanced strategies for health before they even mastered the basics.

Many of us get addicted to wanting to know advanced, specific strategies. Is it that it makes us feel better about ourselves? Is it that we dont feel we are worthy of the basics? Are we trying to “look good” to someone else by wanting the complex tasks?

I’m not sure, but here’s the deal.

If you’re sitting on the couch wanting to know whether you should go vegan, or gluten free, or is pilates right for me, FIRSTLY, get off the bloody couch!

Start by mastering the basics.

Go for a walk each evening, eat mostly from nature ad take 10 minutes out of your day to switch off and meditate. Once you’ve been consistent with that - then add more complex tasks.

Don’t fool yourself that you are further down the health path than you actually are.

If you ned help, I’m here for you.

What Is A Chiropractor Feeling For?

A common question I get from someone laying on the Adjusting table is - “What exactly are you feeling for when you check my spine?”

What a super question, let me dive in.

After we have conducted a thorough history, found out your current state of health, what your concerns are, examined your spine, checked your posture, found any restrictions, done any necessary scans, looked through any X-rays etc - we have a great idea of how we need to proceed.

When determining what, where and how I need to adjust you I take in to account all the above information and what my “on the table” assessment tells me. This “on the table” assessment is looking for the following things…

Neurological tension patterns, muscle activity / tension patterns, postural changes, restricted joint movement, muscle weaknesses, tenderness and leg length changes.

Putting all of this together tells me what and where you need to be adjusted, OR not adjusted.

So whether you have back pain, neck pain, headaches, no symptoms or lots of symptoms - the criteria for where I adjust you remains the same. If you have areas of your spine that need adjusting - I’ll adjust them, if you don’t, I won’t. It’s as simple as that.

HOW I adjust your spine may change due to how comfortable it is. If you’re finding it painful for certain adjustments, then I will change my approach of course.

Constant tracking to see how your body is responding to the adjustments is crucial. We need to track your progress, change where necessary and keep your body moving towards the goal.

Please, at any stage if you’d like to chat about this more - I’d love to.

Headaches and Back Pain - study finds a link.

Headaches and back pain are two of the most common ailments that people seek help for. Both these conditions can be life changing, They can prevent people living a normal life. The burden on the individual and the health care system is nothing short of catastrophic, costing billions of dollars every year, days off work etc.

New research has looked into people suffering from either Back Pain or Headaches and found that if you are someone that either has headaches OR back pain - you are twice as likely to suffer from the other.

This result from looking at 14 different studies, involving hundreds of thousands of people, suggests that treating back pain and headaches separately, may be the wrong approach.

This falls in line with our approach at Auburn South Chiropractic, where we take the whole individual in to account. We are always looking to the underlying cause, looking at the whole body to find out why it’s not working properly. We don’t just look at one part of the spine, we look at it all. We realise that the symptom and the underlying cause may be in different locations.

Health can be tricky, but to start with getting your spine right, is a very good start.

Yours in health.
